CodeKlavier: Re-thinking the musical instrument

Abstract

The CodeKlavier is a system/language that enables a pianist to live code through means of playing the piano. In doing so, we are appropriating the traditions of piano playing and transferring them to the practice of live coding.

Through the project's work, we have realised that using the piano as an interface for live coding in fact results in a new instrument for live coding. Working with this new instrument, some elements become easier to do whilst others are more challenging. Essentially, this results in alternative notions of " what is idiomatic" for the genre.

In this presentation, we would like to reflect on how the CodeKlavier has taught us to "re-think the (musical) instrument" for live coding through a reflection of our work over these last three years. If there is time, we would also be interested in streaming a live performance.
